When we left off last time, the French Buccaneers led by Pierre Le Picard and

Matherin de Maré were marching across Central America.

Ravno de Luzon, a crewman and writer, inserted himself into all of the most dashing exploits, and he might actually have been involved in some of them.

The pirates fought off ambush after ambush from the Spanish. They carried

packs full of silver and gold and emeralds and pearls and even a few rubies and diamonds.

They marched through woods and over savannas,

and they died.

Only one or two here, one or two there,

but they were dying. The Spanish were picking them off, slowly, but every

day there was another ambush or two, and it had been ten days since they set out on second

January, 1688. That's 10 days of roughly 4 leagues a day, that
