Summary

On this week’s episode of The Empire Files, Abby Martin interviews American political figure Ralph Nader about the 2016 presidential race—from the “Brown Shirt” Trump movement to “corporate criminal” Hillary Clinton—and the reality of who has power in America. Known for his widely-popular presidential run in 2000, he also ran presidential campaigns against corporate power in 1996, 2004 and 2008. A consumer advocate since the 1950’s, his work against auto industry giants forced the creation of mandated safety measures that saved millions of lives from for-profit auto production. His contributions span disability rights to exposing corporate pollution. stand against corporate hegemony struck fear into establishment politics, but hundreds of millions

experienced Nader's legacy every day. Most notably, how virtually every automobile safety measure,

from seatbelts to airbags, is the product of his relentless campaign against auto industry giants, saving millions of lives.

the auto industry, where you heavily critique their safety standards. General Motors went after

you pretty hard. I wanted you to outline the insane tactics that the industry employed against you.

Well, they had a habit. They had hired former FBI agents who retire on their security staff.

1:12.6

So anybody who criticized them and got it through the media, they'd send a detective to get dirt on them.

1:18.6

So I guess I was just in line, and they sent detectives to trail me.

1:23.6

They trailed me to Iowa, where the Attorney General of Iowa was holding auto safety hearings.

1:29.3

They stubbed their toe, though, when they trailed me up to the new Senate office building,

1:33.3

and I was scheduled to testify for Congress in a few days. And you see, if you obstruct a congressional

1:40.3

witness, that's a felony. So the guard caught, he caught them. And Senator

1:47.8

Rilkoff had hearings. Senator Bobby Kennedy was on the show, on the hearings rather, and

1:54.6

they summoned the President of General Motors, who admitted it. And that created a huge wave

1:59.7

to enact the 1960s

2:02.6

motor vehicle highway safety laws, which irregularly enforced to save over 3 million lives.

2:09.6

How hard would it be to pass similar legislation today?
