Hi, I'm Michael. Welcome to Beyond the Screenplay. Today we are talking about Before Sunset and really just the whole Before trilogy. I am joined by the Lesson to Screenplay team, writer Trisha Arand.

0:17.9

Hello, everybody. Writer Brian Bittner. Hello. And editor Alex Cayet.

0:22.3

Hi.

0:23.2

So the Before Trilogy is one of my favorite set of movies of all time.

0:27.6

But my first encounter with Before Sunset in particular was this class I was taking in

0:33.9

film school.

0:35.1

So it was like my first or second year maybe.

0:39.9

And I was sitting in class and the teacher professor was trying to tell us about structure and how important it is to follow structure

no their structure everyone was just like yeah like we don't need structure and like we're so cool

1:09.6

everyone started flipping desks and everything's on fire.

1:14.1

That's how I remember it anyway.

1:16.4

And so that was what was in my head when I went to then go see before sunset.

1:21.7

It was like, it's this movie where there's no structure.

1:23.6

And of course, now, nine, ten years later, whatever it's been since, since college,

1:29.7

the reason I love before sunset is that it's so structured. And I've come to appreciate the amount

1:36.7

of work that goes into making something feel unstructured and effortless. And that's just, I think,

1:42.6

one of the greatest achievements of all three
