Summary

This is a live recording from our recent show at The Royal Institution Theatre in London.

The panel includes returning guests Philip Goff (professor of philosophy at Durham) and Rowan Williams (former Archbishop of Canterbury), as well as two new panellists, Elizabeth Oldfield (the popular writer) and Alex O’Connor (the popular YouTuber).

It’s a very warm and good-spirited debate exploring the problems with traditional religion and atheism. The main arguments discussed are the argument for God from design and the argument against God from evil. Veteran listeners will be familiar with these arguments; still, in each case, it’s fascinating to hear the responses from both sides of the aisle on what their opponents take to be the strongest objections to their view.

1:11.6	So I just want to say, I kind of, what I respect deeply about you, Philip, is you've been going to church, right?
1:17.6	And my thesis, I don't know anything, this is very presumptuous, is that the reason you've shifted is not because you've made some model work, it's because you've been going to church, that the hemisphere hypothesis, which, you know, you need to take with some care and not apply to everything, but what you've been doing is taking right hemispheric forms of attention, collective, ritual, embodied, in storied practices.
1:44.9	And what we pay attention to and how we pay attention changes what we see.
1:48.5	Descartes incredibly left hemispheric, mechanistic,
1:52.8	stripped back to the skeletal bones, flat, narrow version of reason,
1:57.0	is not going to get us anywhere good.
1:59.8	But the form of attention changes what we're able to see.
2:05.0	And if you keep doing what you're doing, I wouldn't be at all surprised.
2:09.1	If things continue to unfold for you, so it's not just theoretical, you're practicing as well.
