Summary

On this extra special episode, Patrick Bromley (critic, host of "F This Movie!" podcast, contributor on Bloody Disgusting, Daily Dead, and Corpse Club) returns to the show and the horror chick Heather Wixson (author and former horror journalist) makes her first guest appearance to discuss 1986's body horror masterpiece "The Fly" directed by David Cronenberg. They also talk about Heather and Patrick's new book "In Search of Darkness," the definitive print companion to the horror documentary of the same name. They also get into the love story in "The Fly," what makes this Cronenberg's most accessible movie, ties to the short story and original movie, and many other aspects of the film. Derek and Aaron fear being destroyed and recreated. Heather and Patrick are working on something that will change the world.Purchase "In Search of Darkness" here: https://aminkpublishing.com/in-search-of-darknessCheck out Heather's other books here: https://aminkpublishing.com/monsters-makeup-%26-effects Join F This Movie!'s Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/fthismovie/posts Follow Heather on Twitter: @thehorrorchickHeather's Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/thehorrorchick/Patrick Bromley is on Twitter @patrickbromleyF This Movie! is on Twitter @fthismovieCheck out F This Movie!'s website: www.fthismovie.netSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/WatchIfYouDareWe are on PodBean, Apple Podcasts, Podchaser, Goodpods, Amazon Music, Google, Stitcher, Spotify, and CastBox. 1:11.2

No, not at all.

1:17.2

I was just going to start by saying, we should all be afraid, be very afraid, because this episode of Watch If You Dare, we have on Patrick Bromley and Heather Wixen to talk

1:24.3

about their new book, In Search of Darkness, a definitive look at 80s horror. What's up, guys? How are y'all doing? Thank you so much for coming on. This is going to be a really cool conversation. I'm excited. Seriously, thank you. Yes. Hey, so thank you guys so much for having us. Yeah, it's weird. Every time I kind of talk about the book, I'm like, wait, we really did this. It's weird.

2:02.1

Yeah. I still haven't reconciled with it yet. So, yeah, it's a very strange process. I don't know when actually it is going to be real in my head, but it's been quite a journey for the last couple years, it's for sure. Hell yeah. So I appreciate you guys taking time to talk with us about it. Well, yeah, and we've been wanted to get Patrick back on.

2:18.0

He was gracious enough to come on to our 100th episode where we did Texas Chainsaw 2. Heather, I don't know if you know this, but a big influence on us starting this podcast was F this movie and a lot of episodes that you were on specifically. So yes, listeners, go check out up this movie. And then you guys also,

2:22.1

which I have a lot of episodes in my backlog of podcast. I haven't started the podcast yet,

2:25.3

but you guys do a West Craven podcast as well. What's the name of that one again?

2:30.9

That would be Craven Craven, which we've actually run through all of his films and finished that series. And now we're on to hanging with Toby Hooper in which we cover every Toby Hooper movie. Oh, hell, yeah. So, yeah, listeners, go check out those podcasts. All of them. They're all great. So welcome back, Patrick. But Heather, this is your first time on. Why don't you tell our listeners a little bit of your background with horror and film in general.

2:55.2

It's so weird to talk about this now because I recently like sort of, I guess, quote unquote, retired a little bit from entertainment journalism. So I was like, what does that even

2:59.1

mean now? I mean, horror has been a part of my life like ever since I can even remember.

3:05.4

You know, I was kind of the weird kid in my neighborhood. I always watched horror movies or watched wrestling. So a lot of my friends didn't know what to do with me. Same here. Yeah, I mean, we all have a different path that we take, but I think the DNA kind of is the same where we all sort of have that moment of like, oh, do I not fit in with people? And thankfully now there's the internet where all of us get together and argue about movies endlessly and remakes. So I kind of like went through a bunch

3:29.6

of stuff in terms of like the adult things like got married, got a house, was doing like the

3:33.6

normal job stuff. But I'd always been writing like ever since probably kindergarten. Like I was just
