We spent a lot of last time talking about ideas, concepts essential to the world of the pirates. Those ideas were threefold. First was

the hydrarchy, an amalgamation of superstitions and customs and laws that govern the life of men at sea.

I called it the rule of the sea.

Second was the distribution of justice, which will concern us today. That was a tradition particular to pirates in which a captured ship's officers were judged.

Were they found to be cruel or incompetent, they could face anything from keel hauling to marooning among many lesser punishments.

And then I raised a question, a question that I neglected to answer.

When does someone stop being a colonial subject

and start being a citizen beholden to a foreign power?

When does a citizen of colonial Mexico stop being Spanish and start being Mexican?

Now there's no definitive answer to that question, but I wanted to introduce that before we discuss the hydrarchy.
