Welcome to the Human Performance Outliers Podcast with hosts Dr. Shawn Baker and Zach Bitter. For this episode, Dr. Robert Cywes joined the show. Robert's medical training began in Cape Town, South Africa where he received his medical degree from The University of Cape Town. In 1989, Dr. Cywes moved to North America and completed a year-long residency in Pediatric Surgery at Ohio State University’s Columbus Children’s Hospital. Then he moved to Canada where he completed his general surgery residency and specialized in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Toronto. Also, Dr. Cywes earned a Ph.D. in Liver Carbohydrate Metabolism and the effect of glucose metabolism on liver transplant immunology.

Can I just ask you a question just before we start?

You have a kid with autism, is that right?

I do. Yeah, my 13-year-old boy.

Was at the time that he was born, the first couple of years, because I'm being a talk on this in a couple of weeks' time, what was your wife's diet? You know, my wife at the time, I'm no longer married to her, but she's an energy and she's a physician. She ate a, I mean, I think she tried to get enough fish in her diet, you know, for DHA back then. You know, again, this is 13 years ago.

Right. She was, you know, certainly not eating a high fat diet. She was probably eating a,

what she would consider a relatively lower fat, you know, diet. I don't think she ate a

particularly unhealthy diet. It wasn't junk food for sure. I mean, it was probably fruits and

vegetables and some lean meat and some fish and that sort of stuff. I mean, she didn't have,

she didn't have maternal gestational diabetes or anything like that.

I know this is an interesting topic because I certainly, you know, kind of ponderance,

and I do think that probably autism has, at least in part, some sort of dietary cause,

probably during maternal nutrition period.
