Summary
John was a lot of fun to interview. He's also clearly a joyous hiker, despite hiking in 2003, one of the five wettest years on record. He gives back to the trail with his annual trail magic on Labor Day in Maine. Additionally, he heads a bunch of guys known as the "Fat Guys Back in The Woods." Wouldn't you want to be in that little group? If you do, or even if you'd like to chat with him about it or even join his trail magic spectacular, you can email him directly at john.skeezix@gmail.com. Don't forget to leave any comments for me at the website, on iTunes, or on Stitcher. Email me directly at steve@mightyblueontheat.com, if you'd prefer. You can also get a FREE copy of my ebook, Hiking The Appalachian Trail Is Easy: Especially If You've Never Hiked Before by visiting my author's website, steveadams.info. | 0:39.1 | who contacted me after I called for more people who had their own stories to tell. |
| 0:44.2 | John O'Shea reached out and we recorded the interview several weeks ago. He's of Irish descent |
| 0:49.6 | which is code for chatty. Actually he was a lot of fun to speak with, |
| 0:54.3 | and I hope that you enjoy hearing from John. |
| 0:56.6 | He hiked the trail in 2003 |
| 0:58.5 | and experienced one of the five wettest years on record. |
| 1:03.2 | Nightmare. |
| 1:04.8 | Rain was the condition that I found hardest to cope with, |
| 1:08.6 | particularly when I had to pack up a soaking tent in the morning, |
| 1:12.0 | especially while it was still raining. It's been heartbreaking to see the fires in and around |
| 1:17.9 | Gatlinburg and the smoke is recently. By the time you hear this episode of the podcast, things will |
| 1:23.4 | have moved on, so it's pointless to give an update as of today, which happens to be |
| 1:27.5 | December 5th. I reached out to the ATC this morning to see if they'd like to issue a kind of |
| 1:32.9 | bulletin every day or so, and I'd commit to put it out as a special podcast with just that |
| 1:37.9 | interview. It will only take 30 minutes to get it available on iTunes, Stitcher and my website, |
| 1:44.0 | so it will have the |
| 1:44.6 | benefit of being up to date. I've no idea if they'll take me up, but I know that hikers have |
| 1:50.0 | plenty of questions, not least whether or not they'll have a full trail to hike next year. |
| 1:55.2 | If you see some special episodes of the show on iTunes, that'll mean that they took me up on |
