The presumed shoe-in for that role, Kevin McCarthy, who was so confident that he'd be elected that he

actually moved into the office, has faced much stiffer than expected resistance from a group of around 20 Republicans who have now refused to give him the job I think six times.

And for what I can see, this group of 20 is being guided by a heady combination of lofty goals and cynically self-interested goals, but whatever their motivation,

they have managed to grind things to a halt.
