Summary

Far below the ocean surface is a vast environment of cold, darkness, very scarce food, and surprisingly diverse life. Deep sea life is quite mysterious, in part because of their unusual adaptations for surviving in such tough habitats, and also because it’s very difficult to study organisms of the deep, modern or fossil. In this episode, we discuss what is known about the adaptations, evolutionary history, and diversity of life in the deep sea. In the news: blade-tailed ankylosaurs, ostrich-like dinosaurs, shrimps in clams, and carnivorous ichthyosaurs. Today we are discussing the deep sea.

0:28.9

The deep.

0:30.3

Yeah, this is an interesting topic because there's a bunch of stuff to discuss with the deep sea.

0:35.8

We have the things that live down there.

0:38.3

Sure.

0:39.0

What conditions they have to live under all that water.

0:43.2

Yeah.

0:45.4

And the history, you know, fossil history and how things got to be the way they are down there,

0:51.5

how the organisms got to be the way they are down there.

0:53.5

Yeah, yeah.

0:54.1

Well, this is also just the deep sea, and that's sort of the broad term, is one of the most expansive habitats on the planet.

1:02.2

Exactly. Part of the reason there's so much to cover in this topic is just because it is the largest expanse of our planet of varying habitats.

1:11.6

Not as densely habitated as other places necessarily, but wide and diverse.

1:18.7

There's a lot of different, interesting, and wholly unique habitats in the deep sea.

1:23.5

Can't wait to hear about it.

1:24.8

Now, as usual, we are discussing this topic because it was requested.

1:29.2

This episode was requested by Kieran, Hobart's Obsession, Alejo, and Joshua, a couple of which
