Hey, everybody. Welcome to the Cripescast. I'm your host, Charlie Barons. And this is the podcast where we talk to people for Andor from the Midwest.

0:07.6

We are brought to you by Charlie Goodsoda. And here is today's episode.

0:14.6

Hey, everybody. It is voter week. It's right. It's not just a day anymore. At least not Wisconsin. You can vote early.

0:21.5

Early voting started last week. And then you can do it all this week. Um, I up to the fifth, I believe. Um,

0:28.8

and then from there, you vote on election day, which would be next Tuesday. But anyway, I, my guest today is Jacob Resnick.

0:37.8

He is an investigative journalist with Wisconsin watch. Um, he covers a lot of, uh, state politics and sort of the nuts and bolts of things.

0:46.8

Um, it keeps people accountable. That kind of thing, doing what good journalists do. Um, Jacob reached out to me about a month ago, because my name was off the, um, voter list, because I had moved.

0:58.8

Uh, Wisconsin. They've been doing some purging of the voter rolls, which is a whole other story altogether. I think it gets a little political in there. But the point is, as he reached out, because I was not, uh, my registration wasn't current.

1:11.7

It now is. I actually just voted this morning. I early voted in Milwaukee, uh, right over there by Washington Park, which by the way, if you're a Milwaukee, that's a beautiful park. You should go check that out.

1:22.6

Uh, very lucky to have that in the city. And, um, but anyway, I voted early. It was quick.

1:28.2

It was easy. It took five minutes. So, you know, if you're, if you're thinking of waiting till, uh, to election day to do it, you know, you never know when you're going to get stuck in a long Midwest goodbye.

1:40.7

And you could miss the boat. You know, I don't, I don't know. Some Midwest good buys glassed up to eight to 10 hours. So, you know, that could really affect your voting. If you get stuck in one of those on voting day.

1:50.4

So you might as well vote early. The options there for you. The lines will be shorter. And, um, uh, or you can vote on election day and Wisconsin. We have, uh, same day voter registrations. You can register at the polls.

2:03.6

All the nuts and the bolts and what you'll need, uh, when you go to the polls, we're going to get to in this podcast. And folks, of course, before you listen to this podcast, if you're like, I need the facts quick, I need to check them out now. Go to my vote.w i.gov. If you're in Wisconsin, my vote.

2:18.4

.w i.gov. It gives you the most up to date information on your own voter info. You're polling place. What's on the ballot, um, making sure you update your name and your address, uh, registering, voting absentee, all that sort of stuff. You can check it out my vote.w i.gov. All right. And here is my conversation with Jacob Resnick.

2:41.1

So I voted, uh, early this morning. Um, and, uh, we initially connected because you reached out because my name was one of those names that was purged from the voter list. What, what, what was that all about just to give everyone sort of a sense of that all being honest. I have no idea. There were, I was, I'm, I'm relatively new to Wisconsin. I moved here earlier this year in 2020. There were some efforts. Um, to purge

3:11.1

voters. Uh, I guess Wisconsin is kind of unique in because you have same day registration. And that's something I do want to talk about. I don't think you'll understand that. It's not under federal law to do routine maintenance and, um, and, uh, updated voter lists that said, um, there was some purging going on. And we should, I mean, I don't know that anything untoward was happening. But, you know, you, you know, people move, people pass away.

3:40.1

You have to maintain your role. So yeah, you, you, uh, were on a listed on the mover list. And then I got, I got in touch with you to see if maybe something happened, but you turns out you had moved. I had moved. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Well, so systems working. So it worked. Um, that's good. And, and the reason I thought it would be great to bring you on here. Sort of, uh, the week before election day is just to, um, let people know sort of the nuts and bolts, the logic of it. I mean, look, even me being a, some

4:10.1

somewhat informed citizen, I still checked, um, the website a couple times to make sure like, okay, so I'm good with just my state ID. Um, that has my current address on it. Or do I need to bring, you know, a utility bill or something like that as, as I've, um, had to do in, in the past, I believe, um, or they, they kind of come up with new rules sometimes. And you're like, is this like the DMV, you know, where you got to bring it.

4:40.1

So what should people, uh, or go into the polls, either early or on election day, um, know that they have to bring in order to get their vote, uh, there and have a count.

4:54.1

So yeah, Wisconsin has a voter ID law. Um, you have to, you've got a driver's license. You're good to go. You've got a student, if you've got a student ID for an accredited college or university in the state of Wisconsin, got your photo on it.

5:09.1

Yeah, that's issue and expiration date and it can't be more than two years out. You're good to go. You got a tribal ID. You're good to go. Um, if you're not registered or if you've been thrown off the list or purge or something like that, it gets a little more complicated.
