| 1:13.8 | Today's episode is episode 124 and it's the second episode in a small mini wander into the history of the island of Cuba. |
| 1:22.3 | We left off in episode 123 at just the point where Spain had landed on, commandeered, and then conquered Cuba. |
| 1:31.6 | And thereafter, the Spanish applied the usual 15th and 16th century colonial ways to the island and its inhabitants. |
| 1:40.1 | In today's episode, we wander through several hundred years of colonial rule by Spain, |
| 1:46.1 | including its mother country restrictions on trade, the focus on the two major industries |
| 1:51.6 | of sugar, cane, and coffee, the eventual importation of a massive number of slaves from Africa |
| 1:57.5 | to create the labor force in scale for those industries, and finally, conflict within Cuba, |
| 2:04.8 | which eventually ignited the march toward independence from Spain. So, back to the beginning |
| 2:11.3 | of things for a second. You know, Christopher Columbus never set foot on the United States proper as we know it. |

| 2:20.1 | Well, I mention it because those that were here in the American colony under England |
| 2:24.5 | developed in a much different way. |
| 2:27.0 | And that way eventually led to a path toward national identity. |
| 2:31.9 | And then, of course, independence as a nation. |
| 2:34.9 | And our path here in the U.S. was in full swing by the mid-1700s. |
| 2:39.6 | Here in the states, we would accomplish independence from the mother country some 125 years ahead of the islands. |
