Summary

Concluding the two-part series on the circulatory and respiratory systems, I discuss the biochemical mechanisms by which red blood cells and hemoglobin molecules deliver oxygen to the tissues and carbon dioxide to the lungs, and the mechanisms which regulate these processes. I then consider the respiratory system, giving an overview of the structure and function of the lungs, the process of breathing, control of breathing, and adaptations to high altitudes. Recommended pre-listening is Episode 122: Respiratory and Circulatory Systems Part 2. Oh, wow.

Oh, my. Hello, you're listening to The Science of Everything podcast episode 123 respiratory and circulatory

0:39.7

systems part two. I'm your host, James Fodor. This episode is, unsurprisingly, a direct

0:45.6

continuation of the previous episode, 122 respiratory and circulatory systems part one, which is a prerequisite.

0:52.7

And in this episode, we're going to pick up from where we left

0:54.6

off there and talk about the role of blood and how it transports oxygen and other nutrients

1:01.0

and wastes around the body. We're going to look at blood pressure, oxygen dissociation curves,

1:05.8

blood types, and a bit about the lymphatic system. We're then going to talk about the respiratory

1:10.4

system and talk about where blood gets its oxygen from

1:13.6

and how oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in the lungs and the process of breathing,

1:17.6

as well as control of respiration and a little bit about adaptations to breathing in high altitudes.

1:23.6

Before we get into that, however, there are a couple of announcements about the show.

1:28.3

So some of you may have noticed previous episodes appearing in the feed.

1:33.9

And I mentioned this in the end of the past episode, but for those of you may have missed that or forgotten,

1:40.3

the reason for this is because certain aggregator sites do not allow MP4, sorry, they do not

1:47.3

not our M4A files to be played or distributed.

1:51.8

And some of my early episodes are in M4A format for some strange reason that I don't understand.

1:56.5

So the only way that I've figured out around that is to re-upload them as MP3s.

2:00.4

And unfortunately, I can't put them earlier in the feed.

2:02.7

So they just appear, you know, as most recent items in the feed.

2:06.0

So that's why you're seeing those there.
