On this episode of Newt's world as I watched the terrible fire in Paris that was destroying the

cathedral Notre Dame my thoughts went back to the many times I had visited starting as a young

child when my dad was stationed in Germany. The scale and majesty of Notre Dame is almost overpowering.

Notre Dame is one of the greatest examples of Gothic architecture. When you stand inside you feel

lifted to the heavens by the very shape of the building. As a historian I wanted to devote a special

episode to Notre Dame's story, architecture and its importance to the whole world. This is not the

first time the cathedral known as our lady was nearly destroyed. Throughout its 800 year history

Notre Dame lived through the ransacking of the French Revolution, Wars of Religion and two world

wars. One of my favorite authors is Ken Follett who in addition to his spine novels writes epic

historic fiction. The pillars of the earth is his classic novel and television miniseries based on

extensive research he did based on the building cathedrals like Notre Dame. Ken is an outstanding
