Summary

Dave Wiens is a Coloradan. He's an outdoorsman. He's a mountain biker and skier. He's a father, husband, and hall of famer. He carries the torch of the International Mountain Bicycling Association as their executive director and has a vision for cycling, hiking, and just being outside that makes people want to be part of this vision.  This is a very fun one and I know you'll enjoy it. Hey all, welcome back. I am Ted King, and this is the 117th episode of King of the Ride podcast.

0:12.5

Here we are on the King family late summer, early fall, two-month road trip.

0:18.2

We have been tallying the miles all across the west, ticking off events in Montana, Utah,

0:23.2

Colorado. We just wrapped up the third of this year's three Ted's excellent adventure rides. That was

0:30.3

this past weekend with the very good folks of Renee Harris out of Seattle, Washington. That ride was the

0:36.9

bike packing event that I spearheaded at the start of the year,

0:39.3

with three events all across the country all throughout the year,

0:42.0

and this edition took place in the Cascade Mountains.

0:46.7

Furthermore, it was on this lengthy trip that we swung through Western Colorado

0:51.3

for a mountain bike extravaganza in the likes of Crested Butte,

0:55.9

Gunnison, Telluride, which is all to say that it was on this trip that we had the privilege

1:02.5

to settle down for a bit at Dave Ween's house, to spread out, to do some laundry, to dig a shower

1:07.9

indoors as opposed to inside of a van. And it's where we had this

1:13.2

conversation. This was just on the tail end of Keegan's smashing record-breaking victory at

1:18.8

Leadville, so given that Dave is the six-time Leadville champion, among other star-studded

1:23.3

accolades, it was really fun to talk shop all across the spectrum of shop these days,

1:29.2

which includes some fascinating stories of early mountain biking, how big mountain skiing fits into the

1:34.7

puzzle, the wave of Europeans coming over and taking over the sport in the direction of mountain

1:40.3

biking for a while, how family life works his way into his career and what Dave is up to now as the executive

1:46.9

director of Imba, the International Mountain Bicycling Association.

1:52.6

Dave, you will notice, is a terrific storyteller, and this made for an educational, very

1:57.4

entertaining conversation.
