Summary

All over the Earth, there are biological communities that differ depending on the local climate and landscape. These are biomes, and biologists love to map them to unravel patterns of ecosystem distribution. But biomes also change over time as climates and landscapes shift. In this episode, our favorite paleobotanist, Dr. Aly Baumgartner, joins us to discuss how we identify biomes in the past and present, how they’ve changed over time, and what it means for a new biome to arise … or for an old one to go extinct. In the news: whale diets, moa poop, shark extinction, and flower seeds. It used to be extinction episodes.

These days, it's plants.

And as it turns out, biomes are a major plant-related topic.

0:50.7

Yeah, plants are kind of a big deal when it comes to talking about biomes. They sure are.

0:55.1

They kind of define the biomes in a lot of ways. We're going to talk about what biomes are,

1:00.8

why they're important, how we identify biomes, right, the regions of different biological features

on the planet, and of course, how we study them in the past, how we identify them in the

past, and how biomes have come and gone over time.

1:17.1

Yeah.

But of course, part of this tradition is us recognizing and acknowledging that we don't

know anything about plants.
