Tonight we go to the UK back more than 70 years for a truly shocking case and one that reminds us that life can be

snuffed out in the blink of an eye.

Now you may notice that this is a UK case from 70 years ago, but there's no UK newspapers there.

That was because at the time reporting on court cases that were pending was virtually illegal so that the accused could get a fair trial.

But it was pretty much covered with all the worldwide newspapers because this was shocking to the whole world.

So the main character tonight is an Englishman John George Hay.

He was born on the 29th of July 1909 in Stamford, Lincolnshire, the UK to 40 year old John Robert Haig and 39 year old Emily.

The family then moved to Leeds, West Yorkshire. The Haig household was a strictly religious household.

Hayes parents belong to the Plymouth Brethren which is a Protestant-based religion with the belief that the Bible is the supreme

authority for church doctrine and practice over and above any other source of authority. The household didn't celebrate Christmas

and this denied young Haig at some of the niceties that other kids got.

As a kid they like to fuck around a bit not in the literal sense more in the cruel joke and animal cruelty sense. It's reported that he once chased a piglet until it died of exhaustion and that he

pulled the chair out from an elderly organist causing him to fall and injure himself. He was quite musical though and apparently

he would only play the piano with gloves on to protect his delicate fingers.
