We'd like to share a few words from another leader in family medicine, Dr. Ada Stewart.

Dr. Stewart is a family physician from Columbia, South Carolina, and president-elect of the American

Academy of Family Physicians. She knows what it means to serve, as she enlisted in the Army

Reserves after September 11, 2001, and has achieved the rank of colonel.

I want to share with you something that I have displayed in my office,

and I look at this every day and think about who we are and why we do what we do.

I got this from one of our FMX meetings, and it's from our academy, our family physicians.

And it goes like this.

I treat people, not disease. I build community.

I step up. I answer the call. I am a family physician. I am a leader, scientist, introvert.

I'm a people person and I'm all about my patients. I am rural health, global health, reproductive health, hospital medicine, ER, LGBT,

DPC.

And I serve the underserved.

I practice evidence-based medicine in a meaningful way.

I am equal parts, creativity and compassion. What I do is sacred. I make a difference

in the clinic, in the boardroom in D.C. And I do it every day, every day. I prevent disease

and minimize complications. I save lies, I improve lies.

And oh yeah, I live a life.

I deliver babies, vaccinate,

do procedures, follow up counsel,

hold hands, laugh, pray, say goodbye.

I am flexible and resourceful.
