Welcome back to the History of the Papacy podcast.

I'm Steve, your host, for this podcast about the history of the popes of Rome.

In the last episode, we saw how important the Council of Jerusalem was for the early Christian movement. Christianity was moving forward and gaining new members,

not just from the Jewish sects, but also from the Greeks and Romans. The Greeks and Romans practiced

various forms of polytheism. As most know, the Jews practiced monotheism. We have here

two completely different worldviews on religion. In the next few episodes, we will take an overview

look at the religious situation the early Christian movement existed in. The purpose of these episodes is to give

a summary of the religious situation at the time of the early church and to discuss how the different

religious movements of the time influence the early formation of Christianity. Three of the biggest

religious movements out there at the time were Greco-Roman-style polytheism, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism.

Zoroastrianism is an ancient religion that was once dominant in the Middle East and Central Asia.

Zoroastrianism did have an influence on the development of Christianity, but in an indirect sort of way.

We will look more at Judaism and Zoroastrianism's influence in the next episode or so.

Zoroastrianism was a powerhouse religion, but outside of the Roman Empire.

In this episode, our focus will be on the polytheistic religions
