Chad Bird. Chad, you ready for Leviticus episode two? I am ready. I think we actually might make a little more progress in the chapter this time we had a lot of

0:37.6

introductory stuff last time yeah you think we're gonna get more through more than three verses

0:41.7

yeah I think we could probably manage that. We might even cover five this time.

0:45.4

Oh right. You know one of the one of the things I didn't I don't think either one of us said last time but I was was thinking about this this

0:55.8

morning getting ready for this episode and posted something about it on on Facebook

1:00.5

So I thought I'd repeat it here in case you didn't see that and that is one of the remarkable things about Leviticus is that we're actually talking about it. We actually can read Lividicus. I was doing some some research of one of the

1:17.6

commentaries on Lividicus and they pointed out that in a lot of cultures of the

1:21.2

ancient world like a lot of the Mesopotamian cultures, Egyptian culture,

1:26.0

1:30.0

that the priestly manuals of those cultures were restricted to the priestly class.

1:37.2

So books like Leviticus in those cultures would have been a closed book

1:42.1

to anyone who was not a professional.

1:45.0

So what makes Leviticus unique and countercultural in that way is that it's actually there for us to read. In fact the the second

1:55.9

verse God says to Moses speak to the sons of Israel and say to them etc.

2:01.8

Everything else.

2:03.0

So the whole book is not for the priest.

2:06.5

The whole book is not for this special class that's set aside and only they can read it

2:10.9

like it's some sort of magical formula.

2:12.8

All over the Viticus is just given

2:15.8

to the entire nation of Israel,

2:17.7

because they are a nation of priests, a holy people.
