Summary

"Barbarism is the natural state of mankind… Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph." Robert E Howard   “Becoming a barbarian was often a bid to improve one’s lot.” James C Scott “We are riders; our business is with the bow and the spear, and we know nothing of women’s work. But in your country no woman has anything to do with such things—your women stay at home in their wagons occupied with feminine tasks, and never go out to hunt or for any other purpose” A speech by an Amazon quoted by Herodotus “Persian, such is my nature: I have never run away for fear of any man, nor am I fleeing now from you. I am wandering, as I always wander in time of peace. You ask why I did not fight you at once. May I remind you that we have neither cities nor cultivated land of our own; since we are not afraid of our territory being ruined and plundered, we had no reason to fight you outright… Not will we, until we see fit. Instead of earth and water, I will send you other gifts, of the kind you deserve; and you will weep bitter tears for having claimed to be my ruler.” Idanthyrsus   Typically, I prefer when the episodes I create have a clearly identifiable main character. This particular one doesn’t have a lead character. But what it does have instead is people drinking from the skulls of their enemies, and tattoos, and sweat lodges, and cannabis consumption, and blood brotherhood rituals, and getting drunk on fermented mare milk. In case, that’s not enough, it also has Amazons and Wonder Woman’s golden lasso, centaurs and King Arthur, and a whole lot more. So, I hope you shall forgive the lack of a lead character. Today, we won’t focus on a particular individual but on a culture, specifically some of the steppe nomadic cultures from roughly about 2,500 years ago among people like the Scythians and the Sarmatians.     If you feel generous and enjoy History on Fire, please consider joining my Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/historyonfire to access plenty of bonus content.   All the links to History on Fire social media can be found at https://linktr.ee/danielebolelli  Including the HOF YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFCiqHbWJO26nFzUP-Eu55Q Substack: https://substack.com/@danielebolelli Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/historyonfire/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@historyonfirepodcast Learn more about your ad choices. Hello and welcome to episode 108 of History on Fire. We have officially been in business for over

0:05.7

nine years now, nine years of cranking out, hopefully what you think are good quality episodes.

0:12.6

I like to think that they are. If you enjoy History on Fire and you like to see it keep driving

0:18.6

in the future, the best way to do so is to support it either on Patreon or Substack.

0:23.8

People who support for $5 a month help me keep making podcasts.

0:28.8

You know, they help keep the lights on and keeping the whole thing going.

0:32.7

As I thank you for that, every new episode has no ads.

0:36.4

So if you hate ads, the ones on Patreon and

0:39.8

substack, we'll have no ads. The public version has ads. Those ones do not. Also, I release

0:46.9

bonus episodes every month. And on top of that, I started doing it recently. We had a chat,

0:53.2

a Zoom chat with some of the folks supporting.

0:55.7

That was a lot of fun. I plan to do that again and again in the upcoming future.

1:00.9

So please head to Patreon and Substack and support. Because again, five bucks a month,

1:06.5

hopefully is not too prohibitive. You know, it's kind of the tip you give to a waiter or waitress you don't particularly

1:13.2

like, even if you go out to eat just once a month.

1:17.2

So hopefully something that you feel it's worth it.

1:20.5

But in either case, I want to give also a big shout-out to the folks supporting at the

1:25.1

highest possible level on Patreon.

1:27.4

That would be Mark Chang, the Chimmy Moxon, Justin Bourne, Julian Bailey, Liu Bo Zereva,

1:33.5

Amitai Eschel, Raffaldini Vineyards and Francis Lund.

1:37.7

Francis is the host of the Game Changing History Podcast, which is great and you should check out.

1:44.0

Before we get going, I want to give a few shoutouts.
