Summary

Jesse René Gibbs spent most of her childhood in small town North Carolina under the thumb of a narcissistic mother who twisted religion to fit her interpretation and gave birth to child after child while utterly failing to care for them. Jesse’s stepfather did nothing to protect his children from his wife’s abuse, often dealing out physical punishments when his wife was unable to do it herself, and during Jesse’s younger years, he also abused his oldest step-daughter in his own horrific way under the guise of love.

This is the story of a young girl forced to carry out her mother’s every whim while expected to raise her own siblings, make money for the family to live on, and keep the family home and farm running smoothly. It’s also the story of a survivor who, against all odds, escaped her childhood torment, made something of herself, and wrote a detailed, deeply moving memoir about her experiences using not only her own memories, but journals, official documents, and letters from her mother herself to flesh out her gut-wrenching life story.

This is the story of Jesse René Gibbs, Girl Hidden.
