Hey, this is Steve. It's March 17th, 2020 when I record this. Before we start this episode, I wanted to

provide a brief comment about the COVID-19 public health crisis affecting our world right now.

As you know, lots of things are canceled. The NCAA tournament, the Masters Golf Tournament, movie releases, and Broadway shows,

graduations, weddings.

But you know what's not canceled?

Family medicine.

Now more than ever, we see the importance of family medicine.

You all are on the front lines caring for the health and

well-being of our patients and communities. Thank you. I'd like to share some thoughts I saw on

Twitter from Renee Critchlow, MD, a full spectrum family physician on faculty at the University of Minnesota.

Here's Dr. Critchlow with advice to her graduates entitled Breathe.

So this one is for you folks.

You know who you are, the grads.

I've taught family medicine physicians and medical students for more than 20 years.

I'm talking to you. We are in the clinics, the hospitals, the emergency rooms, and the ICUs.

Remember what I used to tell you. People don't need us when it's easy. They need us when it's hard.

Well, it looks like it's going to get harder for a while.

And when it does, I want you to remember your training. I don't expect you to be perfect. I don't expect to know everything. I expect you to do what I do and what we've taught you to do. We step up

every time. We do our best. We then evaluate and adjust as indicated by the results. We expect you to

remember as you were trained. These are not cases, these are not admits, these are people,

and they are your patients.

They are someone's daughter, someone's mother, someone's father, someone's son.
