Summary

In the 1890's a team of physicians and scientists discovered the cause of bubonic plague, a bacteria they named Yersinia Pestis. It was assumed for most of the 20th century that Yersinia Pestis also caused the infamous Black death of the 14th century. But starting in the 1980's a number of experts started to question this assumption. Does this theory still stand up to scrutiny? Tune in and find out how ebola, basilisk potions, and the top speed of a rat all play a roll in the story.    See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

call it historically consistent.

1:22.8

A reasonable fear of disease very quickly has a way of transforming into panicky paranoia.

1:31.3

What's worse, this paranoia has a way of triggering old prejudices.

1:37.9

Coronavirus certainly is something that needs to be taken seriously.

1:42.6

It's currently a disease with a body count.

But perhaps we can learn a little something from history and not let our fears push us

1:51.4

towards counterproductive and sometimes tragic bouts of anxiety.

1:58.0

If we look back to the Black Death of the 14th century, we see a European population eager
