We left off last time in late June 1807.

Napoleon and the Grand Armee were in the province of East Prussia and had just won a smashing

victory over a coalition army under Count Levin, August von Benegsen, at the town of Friedland

on the banks of the Otto River.

In the weeks after Friedland, the Russians fell back towards their own territory, the

French pursued, but maintained a respectful distance.

Napoleon and his army reached the border at a town called Tilsit, which sits on the left

bank of the River Nieman, which at that time marked the boundary between Prussia and Russia.

Apparently, some of Napoleon's men thought there would be a battle at Tilsit, but the

Russian army crossed the river and re-entered their own territory.

Soon their French counterparts arrived to occupy the town without a fight.
