Summary

Hillary Allen's story is one for the ages. Her 150 foot fall off of a cliff while leading the skyrunning race series, where she broke 14 bones and risked never walking again, is the kind of story you see in the movies or read in a book. Well, you can read it in her book, Out and Back.  We touch on that today, as well as the mental and physical struggles she faced in the aftermath right up through the present. We discuss where her fervor for life comes from, her endless curiosity, her pursuit of science (like real science; organic biochemistry and neurology), and where cycling now fits into her life since her first ever bike race was a little thing called the Unbound 200. Hey there. Welcome back to King of the Ride podcast. Ted King here recording this intro while we are

eyes deep into a New England cold snap. It's about negative two degrees with a rumored

0:17.1

wind chill somewhere around negative 30 today. So amid these past few months here

0:22.6

this winter, and especially on days like today, I have picked up running. Now, admittedly,

0:27.8

negative 30 is beyond brisk, but I love the efficiency of running and how much you can do

0:33.2

in really heinous conditions because it is done and over so quickly, which I bring up for two

0:39.4

reasons. One, I might even enter some kind of running race this year, standby on that. And two,

0:45.8

welcome to the show, our guest, endurance running legend, Hillary Allen. Legend in her own time,

0:54.0

in fact, given her story,

0:56.3

the quick synopsis, while leading the Skyrunning series in 2017,

1:00.4

which she'd already clinched the overall victory,

1:02.6

she fell 150 feet off a Norwegian cliff, and frankly, nearly died.

1:09.6

That story has been told many times over. In fact, if you want to read her book,

1:13.3

out and back, I highly encourage it. I just recently purchased it myself. That accident has been

1:18.7

documented, and I'm so fascinated and curious and excited about this conversation by exploring

1:24.9

Hillary's determination, her grit, her vulnerabilities,

1:29.2

her drive, and how she held it together over that multi-year recovery period.

1:35.0

Hillary is a cyclist.

1:36.8

Of course, that is the common thread here on King of the Riot podcast, the fact that someone

1:41.9

rides a bike.

1:42.9

I love how her first ever bike race is a little thing

1:45.1

called Unbound 200. That's a pretty telling anecdote. Hillary's been on my radar as a guest
