Summary

It's the 100th episode of the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast! In this special episode, AEA grower James Johnson interviews the voice behind the podcast, John Kempf.

James Johnson is a fourth-generation farmer in New Mexico and the Vice President of Carzalia Valley Produce. When James finally took over the family farm in the early 2000s, the outlook of his operation seemed grim. After many years of trial and error with various farming practices, James met the Advancing Eco Agriculture team and discovered the many benefits of regenerative agriculture.

John Kempf is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture. A top expert in biological and regenerative farming, John founded AEA in 2006 to help fellow farmers by providing the education, tools, and strategies that will have a global effect on the food supply and those who grow it.

Through intense study and the knowledge gleaned from many industry leaders, John is building a comprehensive systems-based approach to plant nutrition – a system solidly based on the sciences of plant physiology, mineral nutrition, and soil microbiology.

In this episode, James and John discuss:

  • The importance of nutritional and microbiome integrity for plant immunity

  • How John started and built Advancing Eco Agriculture

  • The importance of sap analysis to see product efficacy

  • How growers who work with AEA reduce inputs

  • John's development of the Plant Health Pyramid

  • Plant health vs soil health

  • The future of Advancing Eco Agriculture

Hi, friends, this is John. Welcome back to the Regenerative Agriculture podcast. Today, we're

0:05.6

flipping the script. I have a very good friend who's been here on the podcast before James Johnson,

0:13.4

who's a cotton grower, and, well, I shouldn't call him a cotton grower because he grows a number of other

0:17.7

crops in New Mexico. James shared some of his story when I had

0:23.3

him here, and he and I have developed a close friendship over the years. And this episode is our

0:29.4

100th episode of the podcast, and I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to all of my listeners, because

0:36.5

even though, because of some family stuff,

0:39.9

I took a sabbatical from the podcast for about a year and we've come back now and we're

0:46.1

actually going to be increasing the frequency going forward. But in spite of, when you think

0:51.8

about it, this is, I've been doing this now for almost three years or maybe a bit longer than three years.

0:55.7

And this is only episode 100.

0:57.3

And yet, according to the statistics that we can see, we're one of the most popular regenerative agriculture podcast episode and one of the most popular podcasts in all of agriculture.

1:08.2

And so that's a big thank you to all of our listeners and a big

1:11.6

thank you to all the guests who've helped make that a reality. So for this episode,

1:17.4

episode 100, we're flipping things around rather than me interviewing someone else. James has

1:23.5

volunteered to be, or is asked to be here to interview me and get my perspectives on some of the things that, where we've come from, where we're going, and what we see for the future.

1:35.3

So thank you, James, for being here and asking to lead this. I'm looking forward to this discussion.

1:41.0

Thanks, John. Yeah, it's hard to believe that it was 25 episodes ago. I was a guest on your

1:46.0

podcast for episode 75. I think the idea for this podcast actually happened about a year,

1:52.9

a year and a half ago. I had a conversation with you about how I had listened to every one of your

1:58.5

podcasts, many of them multiple times, and I had actually

2:01.9

started listening to other podcasts where they interviewed you and how much I appreciated your story.
