In the middle of the Missouri Conflicts of 1833, the Lord gave a revelation to the Saints, where he told them to quote, renounce war and proclaim peace.

But in that same revelation, he also told them that there are conditions and times when he would quote justify them in going out to battle end of quote.

In all dispensations, including our own here in the last dispensation, peace-loving

saints have been compelled to go to war.

Just a month after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks,

the church held its annual general conference

in the conference center.

President Gordon Binkley stood up

and began to give his talk, saying,

I have just been handed a note that says that the U.S. missile attack is underway. I need not remind you that we live in perilous times. We are people of

peace. We are followers of the Christ who was and is the Prince of Peace. But there are times

when we must stand up for right and decency for freedom and civilization.

Justice Moroni rallied his people in his day

to the defense of their wives, their children, and the cause of liberty.

Professor Ken Alford from BYU's religion department

has documented the stories of many of those Latter-Dee Saints

who responded and fought in this ongoing war on terror in

his 2019 book called Saints at War, the Gulf War, Afghanistan, and Iraq. It's these folks in this book that do that, that are willing to stand up and confront that evil.

And so this is a noble thing.

And this is the most selfless group of people I've ever met who are

willing to to do this.
