Our experts on this episode number 10 on trauma pitfalls are Dr. Dave McKinnon and Dr. Mike Brzeowski.

Dr. David McKinnon is an emergency physician and trauma team leader at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.

He is also the emergency medicine postgraduate coordinator at that site. He completed his residency training at Queens University in

Kingston, Ontario. Dr. Mike Brzeowski is an emergency physician and trauma team leader at

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto, where he is the emergency trauma liaison with the

trauma program. He completed his residency and emergency medicine at the University of Toronto in

1993 and trained in Toronto, New York, Denver, Baltimore, and Perth, Australia

in the field of trauma. Trauma kills more people under 45 years of age than any other cause,

and death from trauma often occurs in the first few hours. What you do in those first few hours

will make a huge impact on your patient's outcomes.

Emergency docs in community hospitals provide much of this initial trauma care for the vast

majority of trauma patients in Canada. And so you should be aware of the huge shift in how we care

for trauma patients over the last 20 years. While ATLS is a great starter course for the

unexperienced emergency doc,

there are many key nuggets of wisdom that you should know about trauma that you can't find

in the ATLS manual. In this episode, with the help of two expert trauma team leaders from the

two designated trauma centers in Toronto, we'll discuss many of the pearls and pitfalls of trauma care.

We'll talk about damage control resuscitation, including permissive hypotension,

hemostatic control. We'll talk about the indications for transexamic acid, cryopacipatate,
