Summary

Tune in to our Bests & Worsts of 2014 episodes to hear us discuss these titles and read excerpts from our favorites and least favorites! Please note:

  • We counted things that we read in 2014, regardless of publication year.
  • We didn’t count anything that we read specifically for this podcast, so our worst books are aside from those.
  • For that reason, we picked top 5 favorites and only 1 least favorite–we have this whole podcast to talk about bad books, so for these episodes we’re choosing to focus on the positive!
  • Some of our “worsts” are really just “least best.” Listen to the podcast to hear more detail!

Welcome to the worst bestsellers where sometimes we actually read good stuff.

0:15.4

I'm Kate.

0:16.5

And I'm Renata.

0:17.9

And this is our first ever end of year, end of book year in review podcast.

0:24.4

On this podcast, obviously we talk a lot about really terrible books.

0:28.8

So we decided to spread a little bit of joy and compile our best list, our lists of best books that we read in four different categories over the course of the year.

0:41.7

There are books that didn't necessarily come out in 2014, but books that we personally read in 2014.

0:49.1

And we also will be talking a little bit about what we consider the worst book for 20 in each category for this year.

0:57.6

But worst is pretty subjective in this case.

1:02.8

And so is best.

1:04.0

I mean, I'm by no means trying to be some kind of objective reviewer.

1:07.9

Like, it's stuff that I read that I liked a lot for whatever reason. Maybe

1:11.4

it was really good. I mean, everything in my best list is probably good, but I'm definitely not

1:17.1

looking at this, like, I'm the New York Times reviewer. Well, actually, you know, maybe I'm better

1:22.6

than the New York Times book reviewers, but, you know, I'm not trying to just sort of be very objective about this.

1:29.2

It's about our feelings, you guys.

1:33.2

It's true. It's true.

1:34.9

In the year 2014.

1:37.2

And for worst, particularly, with one exception, basically every worst book that I have listed

1:43.8

isn't even a bad book. It's just a book

1:47.0

that I liked less than I liked the other books that I read this year. When I was a bookseller,

1:52.3

I used to read like hundreds and hundreds of books a year and I read everything good or bad,
