Good morning and welcome to the Increase Your Impact podcast. I'm Justin Sua, episode 1,813. I was recently reminded of a story of a wise, experienced hiker and a young, inexperienced one. They were traveling and they came across a river, a river that was raging. There was no ferry. There was no boat to carry them across, so they decided to build a raft.

0:25.2

They collected the materials and spent days constructing a vessel that would carry them across

0:31.0

this river safely to the other side.

0:33.8

When they were ready, they set out.

0:36.0

The river raged, threatening to drown them, but the raft remained faithful to its purpose.

0:41.6

When they got to the other side, safe and sound, they were filled with gratitude and fondness,

0:47.8

and they were so grateful that the raft held its integrity and kept them safe.

And so the wise man asked the younger inexperience hiker,

0:57.9

so does this mean that we're going to carry this around the rest of our lives, the rest of the

1:02.6

trip? The rest of the trip. And the young hiker said, no, of course not. We're going to leave it

1:08.4

behind. And the wise man said, yes, exactly,

1:12.7

because there's no reason for us to exhaust our energy carrying something that already served

1:18.8

its purpose. And I think it's a powerful story because a lot of times we try to apply

1:27.1

tactics, strategies, processes, principles that served us in the past.

1:33.4

But as we hold on to them, as we go to approach a new obstacle, a new river, a new situation,

1:41.3

and we try to apply the same principle, the same process, it doesn't work out.

1:46.0

And another thing, sometimes we care around these beliefs, these these heuristics, these rules of

1:52.2

thumb that are so heavy and it wastes energy trying to carry.

1:57.3

It's important to let them go, let our guard down, and trust that we can construct a new

2:03.0

vessel or problem solve according to the new situation that we are facing. And so my invitation to

2:10.6

you today is to consider old beliefs that might be holding you back. Things that helped you

2:15.8

before that might not help you today.
