Summary

In May 1775, the Second Continental Congress begins after the war has already started. Delegates must play catchup. They have to decide whether they will support the war and what their goals are. Delegates agree to send one more petition to the King in hopes of pulling out a peace deal. Most delegates though, realize this is pointless. Congress supports the war. The only debate is whether victory means full independence, or simply a better guarantee of colonial rights. Congress creates a Continental Army and selects Virginia Delegate George Washington to lead it. 0:53.0	On the morning of May 10th, 1775, just hours after Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen stormed Fort Ticonderoga,
1:02.0	and three weeks into the Siege of Boston, the Second Continental Congress

1:09.3	Now the First Continental Congress, which I looked at back in episode 48, had set this date to meet when it
1:15.3	disbanded at the end of October 1774.
1:19.4	At that time its purpose was to decide what steps to take if the King and Parliament refused to take
1:25.6	acceptable action on their petitions. Well, not only had London refused to consider the
1:31.4	petitions, but now war had broken out and Congress had to play catch-up with what was now a shooting war.
1:39.0	Many of the representatives were returning from the first Congress.
1:43.1	There were some new phases though who would have major roles.
1:47.0	John Hancock had joined the Massachusetts delegation.
1:50.3	Benjamin Franklin returned from London and sat with the Pennsylvania delegation.
1:54.7	Thomas Jefferson joined from Virginia, replacing Peyton Randolph a few weeks into the session.
