and composing music.

To put it in more practical terms,

theory is the study of music, how it's played,

and how all the different components, as scales and chords fit together.

Guitar theory just refers to guitar application specifically.

Guitar theory is absolutely necessary for serious guitarists who want to develop a solid command of music.
