This is episode zero zero.

I'm Paula, your host and sponsor of the podcast.

In this first episode, I'm going to tell you about my knitting background,

as this is primarily a knitting podcast,

and also what you might expect from this show. I first

learned to knit from my paternal grandmother affectionately called

Momo when I was about eight or nine years old.

My grandmother was an excellent knitter

and her main love was knitting doll clothes. Our dolls had knitted wardrobes, which my mother has

carefully preserved all these years. I remember very well the feel of the light gray wool as she taught me to hold the

yarn in my right hand and lay it over the needle. I made a hat and a scarf. That was pretty much it as far as knitting went for the next 15 years or so.

I really can't remember making anything else in my teen years or when I was in college.

When I was 22 years old, I went to Denmark as the recipient of a Rotary International Graduate Fellowship. I left on May 16th arriving

in Denmark on May 17th, Dinsutni, which is the Norwegian National Holiday.

From the middle of May until September, all I did was study Danish and absorb as much as I could from Danish culture.

Knitting was quite popular in Denmark at the time.

People knitted on buses, trains, subways, and in the parks.

Right away, I noticed that these people knew something I did not know about knitting.

They were fast.

After living in a dormitory in Odense for a month, I was sent to live with a family in the suburbs of Copenhagen so that I could go to a Danish school there. Each day I rode my bicycle to the
