I wanted to like this movie. Really, I did. I tried to like it. But modern realism is just totally unsuited to the Homeric epics and like, also...maybe to telling a coherent story at all? been waiting for this movie for like half a year now. We started out this big series on Homer

and the Homeric epics because I knew that in December there was a movie

coming out called The Return with Ray Fines and Juliet Binoche to terrific actors, especially

Juliet Bynush, I love, but Fines is also always great.

And I was super excited about this because I thought we really haven't had good screen adaptations

of the Homeric epics in a while.

It feels like in this season of our culture where we are making all of these epics and adaptations

and superhero movies and using all this pre-existing IP, the Homeric poems are great candidates for that.

This seems like a really rich vein to tap while you're trying to find all of this other time-tested material,

which seems to be what Hollywood is doing, is they're trying to dredge up all this stuff that they know is going to work,

they know people love. We know that going to work. They know people love.
