Cavan members, we have some important information for you regarding Georgia's upcoming Senate runoff election.

You might be thinking, didn't we just have a really painful election and haven't I already seen these people's names on a ballot and aren't we done yet?

But no, there is an upcoming runoff election in the state of Georgia. It is incredibly important. So what the heck is a runoff election?

Under Georgia's laws, a Senate candidate needs to hit 50% of the vote in order to avoid a runoff. So in the election in November neither of the state's current Republican senators, but David Perdue and Kelly Laughler, reached that cutoff, meaning both contests will go to a runoff election on January 5th, 2021.

And these two races will decide control of the Senate for the first two years of President-elect Joe Biden's first term. But here is the key. Democrats need to win both races in Georgia in order to control the Senate.

Okay, so many important pieces of legislation hinge on these races, protecting the Affordable Care Act, protecting folks with pre-existing conditions, helping folks financially and also medically during this pandemic.

Dealing with student loan debt, basically anything on Joe Biden's agenda that you support, any kind of progressive idea whatsoever, yeah. We need to win these two Senate runoff elections in Georgia in order to make that happen.

So if you listen to our pandemic problems episode, you will remember my case revolved around Senators, David Perdue and Kelly Laughler, and their suspected insider trading for which they've been investigated.

Laughler was insider trading Barbie. Her husband is the CEO of the company that owns the New York Stock Exchange. She has a background in stock trading. And she got classified coronavirus briefings back in January, and then instead of warning her constituents about the very real threat of the coronavirus in COVID-19, she decided to sell off all her stocks to make money.

So invest in stock that she knew would also skyrocket. Yeah, yeah. So that's the kind of Craven person that is currently representing the state of Georgia. Perdue, no better.

She did similar stuff around stocks. He also has repeatedly voted against protecting people with preexisting conditions and then lied about it. Both Laughler and Perdue have downplayed the threat of coronavirus and endangered the lives of millions of Georgians. They're bad news people, they're bad. They're not great.

So their opponents on the Democratic side are John Asaf, who is an investigative journalist, who has fought tirelessly against corruption and the Reverend Raphael Warnock, who is a pastor at Dr. Martin Luther King's former church.

He has also done a lot of work for Medicare and the ACA, so very good options there. Should these two be elected, they have both committed to co-sponsoring and voting in favor of the Equality Act, which is a crucial federal piece of legislation that would finally guarantee explicit protections for LGBTQ people under our nation's existing civil rights law.

That doesn't currently exist. So their opponents are both anti-LGBTQ extremists who will undermine the rights and well-being of that community. It is crucial to do everything we can to ensure that Asaf and Warnock win their races that cannot be overstated.

For Georgia voters, here are some key dates to remember. December 7th, voter registration deadline to vote in the federal runoff election. You must be registered by December 7th.

Then, on December 14th, advanced in-person or early voting begins, so you can vote as early as December 14th. Get your vote in when you can. Highly recommend that. As we've mentioned January 5th, 2021 is runoff election day, big day.

As a side note, if you will turn 18 by January 5th, 2021, then you can register right now to vote in this election. But crucial, check your registration status because Republican politicians have purged voter rolls in recent years, so you need to double check that you are still registered. Or you can find out how to register at Georgia.gov. Make sure you do that so important.
