Tonight I'll be sharing the news reports that I taped the evening of December 8, 1980,

when the news was just coming in over the radio and television about the

death of John Lennon. So let me set it up and give a bit of perspective before we start. On December

8, 1980, I was an 11-year-old boy in the suburb of San Jose, California, some 3,000 miles west

from New York City. Thanks to my older

brothers and sister, I was well aware of the Beatles and John Lennon. We had a lot of music in my

house, which really led me onto the path where I am today. But this particular evening was

something altogether different. I was on my own this night.

Well, no brothers and sisters.

My parents were there.

My dad watched football in the living room.

My mother was probably watching my dad watching football.
