Top Gun is huge. The original 1986 film is an icon of American cinema, and its long-awaited sequel Maverick is currently smashing box office records.

Not only that, it's a hit with critics, many of whom have lauded the movie's celebration of patriotic themes, but what many don't know is that the secret to Top Gun success beyond the amazing cinematography is that it's actually a fantastic retelling of an ancient myth, perhaps the oldest story ever.

A grand epic known as the Monometh, the hero's journey. As with the travels of Odysseus and the adventures of the Hobbit, Maverick retails this ancient tale in new and exciting ways, and that is why this movie is so amazing.

Now, fair warning, there are plenty of spoilers here, so be prepared, but with that, make sure to like, comment, and subscribe, and let's discover the ancient myth behind Top Gun Maverick.

The Monometh or Heroes Journey is an ancient story structure centered on one who goes on an adventure, faces countless challenges and adversities along the way, and comes home, changed, and transformed.

As we might have guessed, the journey begins with a call to adventure, and that's exactly how Maverick begins.

Set three decades after the events of Top Gun, Captain Pete Mitchell, call sign Maverick, is a U.S. Navy test pilot who's deliberately turned down rank promotions so that he could continue to fly.

But all of that changes when he's literally called by his best friend Admiral Tom Kazansky, call sign Iceman to the Naval Air Station North Island as a Top Gun instructor.

Iceman wants Maverick to train a new elite group of young pilots to take out an unsanctioned Uranian enrichment plant in an unspecified country that's deemed a threat to the United States, and this leads to the second stage in the Heroes Journey, the refusal of the call.

Think about when God called Moses at the burning bush to journey back into Egypt and rescue as people Israel.

Moses originally resisted and told God to send someone else. This is a common ancient theme, and it reveals the inherent insufficiency of the hero.

He or she may be too scared or feel totally inadequate for the call, and the key here is that they can't rely on themselves to accomplish the task at hand, which means they require the blessing of a grace and assistance from something outside themselves.

When Maverick is first called to train the new group of elite pilots, he wants nothing to do with it. He's a pilot, he's not a teacher, and so when he shows up at North Island, he's immediately humiliated by getting literally physically thrown out of a bar by what would end up being his own students.

But we quickly find out that something far deeper is going on. One of the students that Maverick has to train is the son of his best friend Goose, who died in the original Top Gun.

We quickly find out that Goose's son Rooster hates Maverick, because Maverick blocked his application to the Naval Academy, setting back his career as a fighter pilot.

What Goose doesn't know is that Maverick made a promise to Goose's late mother to keep her son from flying. She didn't want to lose him the way she lost his father.

To make matters even more complicated, Maverick realizes this mission that he's training Goose in his fellow pilots for is so dangerous, chances are most of them will not be coming home.

Now this insufficiency motif leads to the third stage of the hero's journey, and that's supernatural aid, and this is where that special someone who has the grace to accomplish the task enters our hero's life.
