Summary

Ice Age Trail thru-hike: Luke Kloberdanz's 1000-mile journey on Wisconsin's National Scenic Trail – exploring glacial landscapes, natural beauty, mental and physical rejuvenation, hiking, snowshoeing, backpacking, and the dedicated volunteer community that maintains this iconic footpath.

Originally aired August 17, 2017

Luke Kloberdanz visits with Curt about his thru hike of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, a thousand-mile footpath that highlights these landscape features as it travels through some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas. The Trail is entirely within Wisconsin and is one of only eleven National Scenic Trails.

But the Ice Age Trail is more than a path through the woods. It is a place for mental and physical rejuvenation, a place to unwind after a hard day and enjoy the landscape of Wisconsin. More than 1 million people use the Ice Age Trail each year to hike and snowshoe, to backpack, to disconnect and reconnect.

Behind the scenes, a vibrant community of volunteers across the state work to build and maintain the Trail, making it one of the country’s best hiking experiences.

Hey folks, welcome to the Adventure Sports podcast. I am your host, Mason, but today we're

0:27.7

doing a throwback Thursday episode, but really it's Friday. And that's because I was a little

0:33.5

late with the episode on Monday. I was sick over the weekend in the early part of this

0:38.7

week and still a little behind catching up, but I wanted to give you a little more time to

0:43.7

listen to Lonnie Bedwell's episode from yesterday. Oh my gosh, or two days ago. Unbelievable

0:51.5

episode talking about becoming blind and getting into adventure after being

0:57.0

blind and raising his three daughters as a single father. Unbelievable story. And I just wanted to

1:03.5

make sure everybody had a chance to hear that first. But this one is great as well. This is

1:08.1

from 2017. And it's a throwback to when Kurt was the host,

1:13.4

episode 297.

1:15.5

Luke is talking about the Ice Age National Scenic Trail,

1:20.2

beautiful thousand mile footpath that doesn't get talked about a lot.

1:23.8

But it's one of our only, you know,

1:25.7

dozen or so national scenic trails with, you know, some of the more popular ones, often being the Appalachian Trail, the Continental Divide Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail, stuff like that. I just wanted to highlight, you know, a trail that doesn't get a lot of attention. Right now, what's popping off is the trail that I live near, which is the Florida Trail. A lot of people are getting ready or have started that.

1:46.4

It's a great thing to do in the wintertime.

1:48.2

So I hope you enjoy.

1:49.4

Hope you have a good weekend.

1:50.4

I'm going camping this weekend with my family.

1:52.9

Wish me luck.

1:53.8

And hope you get out there to the Adventure Sports podcast today. I have a neat show for you about a lesser known through hiking trail, and I'm excited to learn a lot more about this one, because I'll be honest, I didn't know much about it.

2:25.4

And so I'm going to be learning right along with you folks today.

2:29.6
