Many of you were probably not alive.

That year and day, Pope Gregory XII introduced the Gregorian calendar to replace the Julian

calendar.

Now, the Julian calendar had been used since the time of the Roman Empire, but it wasn't

worked.

And so the spring equinox had drifted from March 21st to March 11th.

So to get things back on schedule, the Gregorian calendar eliminated ten days.

So people in 1582, and those of you alive remember this, went to bed on October 4th,

and woke up the next day on October 15th.

So did they lose time, did they gain time, or is it just a wash?

I don't know.

Maybe we'll have to ask Pope Gregory XII, what he was thinking.
