Summary

You'd think there wouldn't be much to talk about when it comes to cleaning—we all have to do it, end of story. But really, it's much more do-able, efficient, and maybe even enjoyable (? okay, not so much) when we do what works for us, not what we "should" do.

Kendra and Tsh talk about cleaning: how they do it, how they don't do it, and things they've learned that work for them. Plus, Kendra talks about her genius idea for cleaning and decluttering a super-smart way: The Swap!

Be encouraged that there's no one right way to clean—but there is a right way for you.

Hi, I'm Tish Docksen Rider. And I'm Kendra Adachi. And on The Simple Show, we talk about saying no and yes to the right things.

0:13.5

In this episode, we're talking about the essentials of keeping our homes clean. And Tish and I have some almost contradictory approaches. So this will be

0:22.7

a fun way to recognize that there's no right or wrong way to do this. You get to say yes and no

0:28.3

to what matters to you. And before we begin, I just want to make a quick announcement that in a few

0:33.5

weeks, actually, Kendra, I'm going to be in your neck of the woods for Nest Fest. I'm so excited.

0:37.5

Are you going? I'm super going. Yay. Okay. So see, listeners, there's even more of a reason to go. It's October 21st, and it's right outside Charlotte, North Carolina, and I will put a link to tickets in the show notes. They're super cheap. I think they're like $10 or something. And it's going to be so fun. There's going to be lots of authors and live music and food and

really cool vendors. And it's from our mutual friend, Michael and Smith, you might know as the Nestor.

1:01.6

So please come. It'll be a lot of fun. Okay. So Kendra, start us off. I'm really excited to hear

1:09.7

what you have to say about cleaning house because I feel like you're the expert in this conversation. And I want to know everything that you would recommend and say and what you do in your own life. Oh, that is so kind. And I clearly have been misleading people for a long time and thinking that I'm an expert at this. The thing that I think is good for me to start by saying is that I

1:29.4

really love the idea of organization and routines and everything, but not everything needs a routine.

1:38.0

And for me, I used to make cleaning, like I would follow the real simple magazine kind of way of cleaning where it was like, okay, so you're going to do your baseboards month a month and you're going to, you know, all these different things like the checklist. And I put those things, I made like a huge calendar and put it on my refrigerator and never did it. And it became such a source of shame for me that I couldn't follow through with this thing that I thought everybody could figure out how to do. And so I think the beauty of this conversation that we're

2:04.8

about to have is that we think that we are born with this skill of being able to keep a home

2:10.7

and we're just not. This is something that you learn. This is something that comes from

2:15.8

figuring out what is important to you in your

2:17.8

house and how you live in it. And so I just hope that there is so much freedom and what we say,

2:22.4

that this is not prescriptive, that this is simply what we have figured out for our own homes.

2:26.9

So the first thing that I will say no to, and I feel like I might get shot is I say no to

2:32.3

homemade cleaners. I don't make my own cleaners. I don't do it.

2:36.7

Do you think I'm going to shoot you or the listeners? Because I'm super curious why you think of that.

2:41.7

I just think that it is so tied to the traditional way of thinking about simple living.

2:48.6

Not necessarily your way of simple living, but that you
