Summary
Triathlon, Gravel Biking: Max Transforms from Couch to Competitive Triathlete – Epic Camino de Santiago Gravel Bike Turns Spiritual Journey for Life Balance at 40. A few years ago Max was facing his 40th birthday, spending most of his time on the couch. His last athletic achievement was a 1-mile run in 6th grade and hadn’t ventured outdoors in decades.
Through a rather unremarkable, but consistent chain of events, he has found an athlete inside, and has become a competitive triathlete and adventurer.
Most recent adventure was originally planned as an epic gravel bike ride, a minimalist multi-day traverse of Spain along the route of Camino de Santiago, the historic pilgrimage that leads to the shrine of the apostle James in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.
However, the spiritual nature of the Camino overtook the physical aspects, and changed the course of the whole ride, and perhaps Max's outlook on life, work, adventures and finding balance.

| 0:00.0 | Hey, folks, welcome to the adventure sports podcast. Today's episode is unique. I'm talking to Max Svetivat. Max is actually an ambassador for us over at Athletic Brewing, which is my day job, non-alcoholic craft beer. |
| 0:27.8 | And he has this cool story of gravel riding, the Camino de Santiago Trail in Spain. And that's often, you know, a hiking or walking trail that a lot of |
| 0:40.1 | people aspire to do. It's a bucket list item. I know I have another friend that's out there right now |
| 0:44.9 | walking it. However, the spiritual nature of the Camino overtook the physical aspects, |
| 0:51.6 | Max was telling us, and changed the course of the whole ride and perhaps |
| 0:55.3 | Max's outlook on life itself, as well as work and adventure and finding balance. So we're going |
| 1:01.7 | to hear about how he got into this. COVID was a big trigger to start being healthier and |
| 1:07.9 | getting active with his son. And it was just a really cool story. |
| 1:11.1 | And it's great to connect with someone that I've known through the ambassador community over |
| 1:15.4 | athletic brewing. So Max, thanks so much for being on the show. It's excited to tell your story. |
| 1:20.7 | And congrats on, you know, balancing a normal life and still getting out there to do these |
| 1:26.0 | adventures. And it sounds like, and what he's |
| 1:28.4 | going to tell us is it's not over yet. So if you think that you can't have adventure because you're |
| 1:33.3 | not in your early 20s or you're not retired, you know, you have that era of work in your life that's |
| 1:39.7 | most of our life, well, this show, one of the reasons we do this show is to break that stigma and |
| 1:45.8 | break that misconception because we talk to a lot of people who have a normal life and get these |
| 1:52.9 | done in the windows that they can. And it's just as rewarding of an adventure as that gap year in |
| 1:58.8 | your 20s. You know, I'm in that stage of life myself. I've got two little |
| 2:02.4 | kids, a business, work for a startup. Life is busy and a lot of interest. And I feel like I'm |
| 2:08.2 | more adventurous now than I've ever been. So it really is a mindset and it really is taking |
| 2:13.6 | advantage of those times you do have and looking for those windows of opportunity |
| 2:18.5 | and maximizing them. No pun intended with Max's name. So all right, let's go ahead and jump in. |
