Summary

Hiking, Photography: Andy Magee Visits All 418 US National Park Sites in 2019 – Epic Year-Long Quest Overcoming Shutdowns and Closures.

Originally aired January 25, 2021

Amid a massive government shutdown, travel companies going out of business, and a myriad of unforeseen circumstances, Andy Magee successfully visited all 418 national park sites starting January 1, 2019 and finishing December 31, 2019.

Traveling thousands of miles around the country, Andy got a cross-section example of who and what America is in a sense that few can relate to.

His stories are amazing and his reflections will inspire you to get out there and visit the nearest National Park site near you.

Be sure to take a look at his incredible photos from the journey.

Hey, folks, welcome to the adventure sports podcast. I'm your host, Mason, welcome to the Adventure Sports Podcast.

0:23.3

I'm your host, Mason, and today's episode is a throwback Thursday episode to a few years ago when we talked to Andy McGee.

0:30.6

This is one of my favorite episodes, I'll have to say.

0:32.8

I think the idea of visiting every national park in a year is just crazy.

0:39.4

And by the way, this isn't just like national parks like you're thinking of, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, all that.

0:46.5

It's every national park site, which there are about 420 of those now.

0:53.0

Everything from the Smithsonian museums, every little battlefield,

0:57.0

historical places, national seashores, national monuments, like Mount Rushmore, and then every

1:03.3

national park is, and the stats and the vastness of these places are crazy. And Andy's going to reflect on the experience. And I know a lot of

1:13.6

you were probably thinking that's way too fast to do something like this. That's like a lifetime to

1:18.5

experience it. Why would you do it so quickly? And he had been to a lot of these places. And so he just

1:24.0

wanted to set this goal. And you know what? What it made me think and something we talk about on the

1:27.4

show sometimes is, you know, for adventure, you need framework.

1:31.7

Whether that framework's an event or a challenge or, you know, through hiking a trail, you need some sort of framework.

1:40.3

And that framework's different for everybody. I've got a lot of friends that are fastest known time enthusiasts. They try to, you know, be the fastest to climb something. I have

1:49.3

other friends that are, you know, they, it's photography focus or it's an event focus. So find out

1:57.1

what format really gets you going, whether it's doing something new that no one's ever

2:02.1

done before, or finding something, you know, geotagging or fossil hunting or finding an animal

2:08.0

that you want to see out in the wild. Like, whatever that framework is can be different. And it

2:13.8

doesn't have to follow, you know, the norm. What Andy did was pretty unique and hard to do.

2:19.9

And we're going to listen to just how impactful and beautiful of the story this is.

2:25.2

And I hope you enjoyed as much as I did.
