Together we break down the writing, recording and release of the band's massive breakout hit single,

meant to live, taken from their 2003 major label debut, The Beautiful Letdown.

John mentioned that oddly enough he wrote this big rock song with massive guitars on an acoustic

guitar very quickly in one sitting.

The song was written late in the writing process for the album,

so John didn't even have a chance to demo the tune. However, once in the studio, it was the first song

the band recorded. He talked about how producer John Fields liked to work at a breakneck pace, keeping the

spontaneity and energy flowing at all times while they recorded, something John Fields helped

the immediacy of the recording.

I told John that the song has some of the biggest and fatt-esque

guitars, albeit with an underlying cleanliness and sparkle to them, which is funny considering

he scrambled and asked a friend if he could borrow some amps before the sessions began.

I think he picked the right ones.
