Summary

Originally aired August 9th, 2021

Imagine the endless desolation and sand dunes of the Sahara Desert abruptly falling into the ocean. That’s Namibia’s Skeleton Coast. It’s a brutally punishing environment with the only water being cruelly limitless and ironically undrinkable as it’s filled with salt. The other challenges include dodging the African lions that walk up and down the shore, hoping to snag a meal via a seal lion, the only place on earth that lions actually hunt by entering the ocean.

Kate is back today to tell us about cycling the length of this incredibly unique place.

Enjoy!

1:18.0

And it was unbelievable.

1:19.1

It's sand dunes that go right into the desert.

1:21.7

And it's the only place I believe in the world that lions hunt marine life.

1:26.8

They hunt seals. And so there's this area where lions have

1:30.0

evolved to know how to hunt seals. It's amazing. And it lives up to its name, skeleton coasters,

1:36.3

like whale skeletons on shore and old shipwrecks that just are there in the sand that have

1:41.9

fluent coastline that moves around because, as you know, sand dunes

1:45.7

tend to move around with the wind over time. And it's an amazing place and I'd love to go.
