Summary

In this episode, Laura analyses the most significant aspects of the state’s motion report requesting that Adnan Syed’s conviction be vacated. The report was filed on September 14 2022 and it ultimately led to Adnan Syed being freed on Monday 19th September, after 23 years in prison. Adnan Syed was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping and false imprisonment of his 18 year old ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, in 1999. Adnan has steadfastly maintained his innocence and denied any involvement in Hae’s murder. The case was subject to the podcast “Serial” which debuted in 2014 and has been downloaded millions of times. Also, props to Undisclosed podcast Season 1 ‘The State v. 1:33.0	And not long after that, we saw Edna walk out of that courtroom after so many times, you know, being hopeful and having his hopes dash and the crowd went crazy.
1:52.0	Now we spoke with his attorney, Erica Souter, and here's what she had to say.
1:59.0	Today, my friend and client Edna Sia Ed walks free for the first time in 23 years.
2:07.0	In 1999, Edna was a 17 year old senior at Whitlam High School. He had been accepted into college and planned to major in premed.
2:17.0	Those dreams were ended when Edna was accused of the brutal murder of his friend and classmate, Payman Lee.
2:27.0	Now, Payman Lee's brother, young Lee, did appear in court on a Zoom call. He said to the judge, this is not a podcast. This is real life.
2:39.0	And he asked the judge over and over again to please do the right thing. He did have a representative in the courtroom, Steve Kelly. And here's what he had to say after everything was over.
