Summary

This year the Tour Divide produced a new record, but one that wasn't set to be beaten. Quinn Brett just became the first person to complete the Tour Divide on an adaptive handcycle, with a time of 25 days. For her, this was more about showing the world what is possible for disabled people and that adventures like this are not only for the abled bodied. Thanks to advancements in bike technology, there are now some very capable options available, and Quinn's accomplishment are proof of what these machines are capable of.

Hello, friends, and welcome to the Bikes for Death podcast. As always, my name is Patrick,

0:05.0

and I am your conversational tour guide, taking you on auditory adventures for your mind,

0:11.8

body, and soul. Or you can just call me your host. Regardless of what you call me, today's

0:19.3

episode is a great one. We have Quinn Brett here who just set a new

0:25.0

record on the Tour Divide classic route this year. But this wasn't a record to be beaten. This was one to be

0:34.5

shared. Quinn traversed the entire 2,500-mile Great Divide route on her trike that was built by reactive adaptations.

0:46.7

And they're based out of Crestabute, Colorado.

0:49.3

On this bike, she was able to complete the entire tour divide course and becoming the first adaptive

0:57.1

hand cyclist to ever do this but again this wasn't about setting a record this was about

1:04.4

quinn challenging herself getting back into the outdoors, moving through nature, moving her body, and also being an example

1:17.5

to others and showing other people with disabilities that the outdoors is accessible.

1:24.6

And thanks to advances in technology, it seems like there are becoming fewer

1:31.1

and fewer limits. Before becoming an adaptive hand cyclist, Quinn Brett was a professional

1:38.4

big wall climber. She and her climbing partner set the speed climb record on the nose at El Capitan in 2012.

1:48.6

And that was the beginning of a very prosperous climbing career that came to an abrupt end in 2017 when she fell from the nose of El Capitan. She fell about 120 feet, breaking her back,

2:08.5

severing her spine, losing the loss of her legs, among many other injuries. And as she'll note

2:16.1

in this episode, she's also lost her sense of smell.

2:19.3

This is a truly powerful story, and I appreciate her coming on the podcast to share with us,

2:25.2

and I hope that it is a good resource for other people who are facing challenges in their

2:30.2

life, no matter how big or small, and just can't ever give up you know just got to keep on

2:35.9

pushing i guess there's an old cliche that if there is a will there is a way and certainly this is a

2:43.4

good example of that and before we get to today's episode let's give a special thanks to everybody who made this episode possible, starting
