to review the peer-nominated candidates for a prestigious science award, the American

Geophysical Union's Fellows Program, when they discovered that something was terribly,

terribly wrong with denominations. They discovered that the nominees were white guys.

The fellowship was open to women and black people and every other type of person too, but

it just happened that none of them were interested and nominated. So instead of going ahead

and just picking the winners like they were supposed to do, the scientists on the selection

committee decided to cancel the process altogether. In the words of Helen Fricker, one of the panel

members, the mere presence of the white men, quote, was kind of a bit of a showstopper.
