Summary
Hiking: Alex Fogt Hikes Florida Trail – 1300 Miles Through Pine Forests, Sandy Beaches, Gator Swamps, Skateboarding Sections, Real Florida Adventure Off the Tourist Path.
Originally aired June 10, 2019
Need something wild to do in the winter? You can hike (and skateboard some of) the entire 1,300 miles of endless pine forests, sandy beaches, and gator-infested swamps of the Florida Trail. An adventure that doesn't see very many participants compared to some of the other big trails in the US.
Today we talk to Alex Fogt who took it on last winter and says it's up there with anything else he's ever done! It's a unique experience, to say the least, and will show you the real Florida far from Disney World and condo-covered beaches.

| 0:00.0 | Hey, folks, welcome to the Adventure Sports podcast. I'm your host, Mason. This episode goes back to |
| 0:27.9 | 2019 when we had Alex on the show talking about through hiking the Florida Trail and going by |
| 0:36.3 | some of it because some of it's on road on a skateboard. |
| 0:39.1 | I'd never heard that before. |
| 0:40.8 | And if you haven't heard about the Florida Trail, it is, I've talked to a lot of through hikers about a lot of different trails around the U.S. and the world. |
| 0:48.9 | And so many of them are so surprised by how great the Florida Trail is. And I know if you're not from |
| 0:56.8 | Florida, if you know anything about it, it's very flat, it's swampy. You don't expect much, |
| 1:02.7 | but what I find is those places you expect the least from oftentimes are the most surprising. |
| 1:09.1 | Like you expect mountainous areas. You expect certain parts of the country to be |
| 1:13.7 | amazing. |
| 1:14.9 | And when they are, it really just meets your expectation, which is great. |
| 1:19.6 | But I love when places blow my expectation out of the water in the sense of awe and |
| 1:27.4 | grandeur. Alaska is one of those places. |
| 1:30.2 | I'm sure the Himalayas are, and I've never been, but there's a lot of places I can talk about, |
| 1:34.4 | and I'm sure a lot of y'all experienced. And I think Florida is one of those places. I live here |
| 1:39.7 | in full disclosure. I'm from here. I'm biased, but I absolutely love it. And I will say, I've been |
| 1:45.6 | all over the world doing adventures. I have had some of the most amazing wilderness experiences |
| 1:53.2 | right here in my home state within, you know, miles of my home as I have in other, in Africa, for instance, or other parts of the |
| 2:02.5 | world or the country. And I think it's an underappreciated area. And it's so amazing how much |
| 2:09.1 | wilderness there still is here, how much diversity there is in the wilderness for as far as |
| 2:13.7 | animals and plants and how tropical and just unexpected the things you see are |
| 2:22.4 | and how they just don't make headlines when it comes to stuff going on in Florida, of course. |
