From the beginning of the pandemic, we've been harangued and harassed by people screaming at us that we're all in this together. But it's also been clear from the beginning that some asterisks were needed for that phrase. Actually, every word needs one.

What do they mean by we? Who is we? And what do they mean by in this? In what exactly? And in what sense are we, whoever we are, in whatever we're in together?

These questions are left unanswered, but the powers that be continued to insist on this framing in ways and in context that are increasingly creepy and or well.
